If you’re only selling arrangements, you’re missing out.
Floral entrepreneur or not, there are so many products that can be made with these gifts from nature. Here are 10 merchandising ideas that will build your product portfolio beautifully--
.01 Floral Confetti
Perfect to toss in the air for weddings, birthdays, tea parties, you name it. I like to have some on hand to incorporate in table settings, to use in potpourri, and to put in baths or love letters. The other great thing about floral confetti is that it’s all biodegradable. Perfect for tossing and leaving to the wind. If your supplier doesn’t have floral confetti on hand, making it is fairly easy. Check out Whimsical Wonderland Wedding’s findings for recipes and more.
.02 Magical Floral Brooms
When Cinnamon Brooms are the rave every Fall, why can't Floral Brooms be a thing every Spring? These magical floral brooms can be soaked in essential oil blends to create a stunning aroma that’s perfect to welcome in the warmer months of the year. Plus, they are whimsical and witchy. You can't tell me these brooms wouldn’t look stunning on a Victorian porch.
.03 Floating Floral Bath Packages
We love it when the self-care kit is so good, you can’t help but post about it. These scroll-stopping floating flower arrangements have been all over my Instagram feed lately. I’ve been dying to recreate something like this! Leave it to us flowerheads to make arrangements in any space, at any time, in any element. These bath packages aren’t as simple as a poly bag full of rose petals. I’d suggest selling a bath package at this scale as a made-to-order product.
.04 Reusable Bouquet Bags
Bouquet Bags are an amazing opportunity to brand and advertise your shop. These Instagram-worthy totes not only make your customers look like a million bucks but your hand-tied bouquets too.
Slap on your logo, a cute slogan, and watch your shop be advertised on the streets, on social, and in the hands of your best critics-- your customers.
.05 Shower head bundles
Don’t let the essential oil girls think that diffusers and rollerballs are the only great things in life. Blow their mind with eucalyptus and lavender shower head bouquets. These shower bouquets are also the best way to attract customers via their sense of smell. Set up a cart outside or take these to the farmers market and let the eucalyptus attract all your customers for you.
.06 Dried flower jars - the forever arrangement
Maybe it’s because I love the Beauty and the Beast story, but there is something so enchanting about a bouquet that lasts forever. Put your dried flower arrangements in glass to protect them from dust and add to their spellbound look. These would be perfect to sell around Mother’s day to the sons who were late to order and missed a shot at your live flowers. Or make these gothic with dried red roses and subtle cobwebs for elegant Halloween decor that’s fit for a Vampire Queen.
.07 Flower Chandeliers
Not only would any of these flower chandeliers look stunning in your shop, but it’s also a great way to reuse any flower heads or buds that pop off when designing. Or, turn this into a made-to-order product for photographers (the perfect prop in a newborn shoot), event planners (a welcoming, above-the-door piece to a new shop opening), or brides (an elegant addition to wedding photography backdrop walls).
.08 Your Own Boquet Buggie
Whether it’s hitting up the sidewalks, farmers markets, craft fairs, or your local main street, floral buggies are the perfect way to set up shop wherever your community is that day. These flower shops on wheels are so cute, a perfect form of interactive branding, and a great way to engage with your community face-to-face, flower-to-hand.
.09 Floral Smokes
My first venture into floral entrepreneurship and art was in Niwot, Colorado (also known as, Vintage Colorado to the locals, or the Left-Hand town to the Natives). Niwot is a small, unincorporated, high-income town that uses the collective wealth of its long-time citizens to preserve its posh, yet nature-connected culture.
“It’s the kind of town where citizens will buy a sack of chicken feed at Niwot Rental & Feed, then stroll next door to buy a Porsche from Gunbarrel Import Motors.” - Colorado Life Magazine
I like to think of it as a town where the horse girls make millions, and businessmen farm for fun.
To get right to the point, Niwot was home to some of the most entrepreneurial pot-heads I have ever come to know. They were always down to try something new in business, farming, pot, art, and then mixing it all together. When I was working with Flowers in the Niwot Market, it was typical to have folks come in asking for dried lavender or dried rose petals for their grinder-- gotta achieve that next level of calm if you know what I mean.
When I saw the image of the floral smokes on Pinterest, I knew that there would at least be a handful of Niwot citizens who would buy them in a heartbeat. I can’t imagine that smoking floral confetti (like pictured) would feel very good on your lungs, a far cry from smoking tobacco or marijuana, but nonetheless, there is something so aesthetic about these.
Not only would they make the perfect prop for a feminine-grunge photoshoot, but they would make a good conversation-starting product-- something to have by the registers for those waiting in line to pick up, admire, question, and buy just for fun.
If you’re not in a town with a smoking culture, the idea can easily be replicated with floral smudge sticks.
.10 Packaging Projects
When designing, I always have a jar filled with straggler stems. They make great handouts to the kiddos that stop by, the firefighters that sit outside on their lunch break, and the gossiping senior citizens that always come in to look, but never buy anything. Needless to say, people love receiving surprise straggler stems. Add them to your packaging to give your customers an extra treat or sell them for quarters by the registers.
